✈️ Where It All Began

At the end of September, we had the pleasure of visiting Francesco Brigatti (owner and winemaker) at his family’s vineyard in Suno, a small town in the Piedmont region, less than an hour from Milan. Our visit happened on the very last day of the wine harvest, a process still done entirely by hand over two weeks.

🍇 The Brigatti Story

The Brigatti family has called Suno home for over 500 years. The vineyard was founded in 1920 by Francesco’s grandfather and is now run by Francesco himself. It all began when his grandmother told his grandfather not to sell their cows — advice he ignored. In this rare case, not listening to your wife turned out pretty well: Brigatti Wines was born.

Today, Francesco carries on the family legacy with passion and expertise, combining tradition with formal training as an oenologist from the University of Turin. He oversees every aspect of the 5-hectare (12-acre) estate, which is divided into three plots each with distinct soil and sun exposure. The winery produces about 30,000 bottles per year, with 70% exported worldwide.

Though not certified organic, Francesco follows natural farming practices — no pesticides for grass control and minimal sulphites are used for aging stability. The vineyard even features an old building once used as a WWII partisan base.

🍷 Our First Imports: Motfrei & Campazzi

Francesco produces seven wines, but due to LCBO space constraints, we are thrilled to begin with two great reds — Motfrei and Campazzi.

The Motfrei wine is produced using the Nebbiolo grape, which is the same grape used to produce Barolo wines from the southern Piedmont region. The main difference, as Francesco explains, is that “the northern Nebbiolo wines are more drinkable—they have finesse, elegance, and a more balanced acidity. Whereas the Barolo wines have more structure and powerful tasting notes.” The Motfrei is full bodied, well structured, and has vigorous tannins with a pleasantly long finish. You will smell cooked red fruits with hints of vanilla, cocoa, and liquorice.

The Campazzi wine is produced using the Barbera grape. It is full bodied, and well balanced with soft tannins. You will smell black plum, with notes of red cherry, vanilla, cocoa and violet.

Both wines are ready to drink now, and will age beautifully developing greater character over the next 1–3 years, and can be stored/cellared for at least 10 more.
